If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading Companion offers realistic estimates of how long it will take to finish a book. It uses the book's word count and a typical reading speed to give a range. These are estimates, not promises, since individual pace varies.

Books in the library are grouped into four time categories: quick (under 1 hour), steady (1-3 hours), immersive (3-6 hours), and marathon (over 6 hours). This helps you choose a book that fits your schedule.

Quick Reads

38 books fall into the quick category. These are under 20,000 words and can often be finished in one sitting. Examples include The Bull Calf and Mr. Jacobs.

Steady Reads

19 books are in the steady range, typically 40,000-80,000 words. They offer a satisfying session of a few hours. Try The Sunny Side of the Street or If Winter Don't.

Immersive Reads

29 books are immersive, usually 80,000-120,000 words. These may take several days of dedicated reading. The humour of Spain and The humour of Italy are examples.

Marathon Reads

14 books are marathons, exceeding 120,000 words. These are long-term companions. The Comic Almanack and Salmagundi will keep you occupied for many hours.

Planning Your Progress

Making Steady Progress with the Reading Tracker

The Reading Tracker is a simple page-based tool. You set a daily page goal, and it shows you how many pages are left and when you might finish. It does not measure time spent reading or sections completed; it tracks pages, which is the most concrete unit for most readers.

The tracker is designed to be flexible. If you are using an edition with different pagination, you can adjust the total page count to match. The estimate is based on your own goal, so you can plan a pace that fits your life.

Setting up your reading plan

When you open a book in the tracker, it calculates an initial page estimate using the word count and a default of 250 words per page. For example, The Sunny Side of the Street — Edition Insights (id 301) has 74,393 words, which gives an estimated 298 pages (74,393 divided by 250, rounded up). The estimated reading time is 324 minutes, which is about 5.4 hours.

If you set a daily goal of 20 pages, the tracker will show that you need about 15 days to finish (298 pages divided by 20, rounded up). You can adjust the daily goal up or down depending on how much time you have each day.

The tracker also shows the estimated remaining time, which is proportional to the pages left. If you are halfway through, you have roughly half the total reading time left, assuming you read at the same pace.

Adapting the tracker to your edition

The initial page count is an estimate. If you are reading in a different format or edition, the page numbers may not match. You can replace the total page count with the number shown in your own reading app or physical book. This makes the progress calculation accurate for your copy.

The tracker stores your progress in your browser's localStorage, so you do not need an account. You can close the page and come back later; your current page and history will be there. This is especially useful for longer books that you read over several weeks.

The default daily goal is 20 pages, but you can change it at any time. If you find that 20 pages is too much or too little, adjust it to a number that feels sustainable. The goal is to help you finish, not to pressure you.
